finding willing, inexpensive models for any of my art projects is one of the most difficult things i do. men are easy, but not so interesting to me. the proliferation of GWC (guys-with-camera)-- who have an obvious agenda that has nothing to do with art-- makes the women i think might be interesting subjects suspicious.
following are some of the women i've worked with, and details on some of our projects.

the quintessence of the female form-- she is more than 30' tall and dances with fire. she is the archetype of the woman i like to work with in my studio

cristal did all of her own costuming and makeup, demonstrating an enormous personal style and charisma.

we shot in and around the sculpture "menage a trois" by rob bucholz-- a trio of massive egglike structures covered in bits of mirror glass and LEDs, around which welded steel pipe reminded one of a giant stick nest. this site was cristal's choice.

the camera loved cristal. like a bad dad, i must admit that she was my favorite subject for this project (with apologies to all the wonderful women who worked with me).

cristal's husband penny proved as photogenic as cristal; working the boundaries between the civilised and the noble savage, penny was a striking contrast.

a handsome couple, they are also charming and life-enlarging company.

her childlike expresion here-- note the tongue sticking out as she concentrates on her work-- is a compelling feature of ana's personality. a self-professed acrophobe, she is perched at the top of a firetruck ladder 50' above ground to make photos-- one of her passions.

if the theme of "the burning woman" was the heroic woman, ana epitomizes that for me here: strength, courage, equipoise, beauty.

another photographer, alana was a super subject who enjoyed creating complex images-- note the reflection in her glasses of the sculpture in which we shot.
olga 1
a candid of olga, capturing her pensive aspect. ukranian by birth, she speaks english without an accent, this image was shot on B&W at a super-high saturation to achieve the sepia tone.
